Iran, UAE Back BRICS Call for Restraint Amid Middle East War
Iran and the United Arab Emirates have backed a joint BRICS statement urging restraint amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. The declaration called for an end to actions that could further escalate tensions and stressed the importance of protecting civilians, respecting national sovereignty and safeguarding global trade, energy supplies and maritime security.
The development came as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi. It marked the highest-level meeting between Iran and the UAE since the conflict began, with the two sides discussing regional stability, de-escalation, peace and development.
The BRICS summit also highlighted the bloc’s growing diplomatic ambitions. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BRICS had reached a new stage, while Chinese President Xi Jinping called for political efforts toward a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in the Middle East. India is seeking to use its relationships with major global and regional powers to encourage dialogue and strengthen cooperation.
