Meta India Head Named in Police Case Over Facebook Videos Targeting PM Modi
Police in Hyderabad have registered a case against Meta India Managing Director Arun Srinivas over multiple videos posted on Facebook that allegedly portrayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an abusive manner. Authorities said they are preparing to issue a notice to Meta as part of the investigation. The company has not yet responded publicly to the case.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of online content in India following recent changes to the country’s digital content regulations. Under the revised rules, social media platforms must remove unlawful content flagged by courts or the government within three hours or risk losing legal protections that shield them from liability for user-generated content.
The case also reflects ongoing tensions between Meta and the Indian government over content moderation. India, Facebook’s largest market by users, has recently questioned the platform over its handling of posts related to Prime Minister Modi and the nationwide student protests, while legal experts note that holding company executives personally liable typically requires proof of direct involvement and knowledge.
