PV Sindhu Becomes First Indian to Win Japan Open Title
PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the Japan Open women’s singles title after defeating Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in the final. The two-time Olympic medallist recovered from an early deficit in the opening game before taking control to secure a straight-games victory.
The triumph marks Sindhu’s first major title since the Singapore Open in 2022 and her first BWF Tour-level title since winning the Syed Modi International in December 2024. After the win, Sindhu dedicated the achievement to India, saying, “This is what I fight for. The flag. My country.”
The victory comes at the perfect time as Sindhu prepares for the World Championships, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from August 17 to 23. The historic title is expected to boost her confidence ahead of one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
