India Pushes for Better Tariff Terms as US Trade Deal Talks Resume
India is seeking a tariff advantage over competing Asian economies as it works to finalise a trade agreement with the United States. The discussions will gain momentum with the visit of U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, as both countries aim to strengthen economic ties and resolve outstanding trade issues.
New Delhi wants assurances that Indian exporters will receive more favourable tariff treatment than regional rivals such as Vietnam and other ASEAN nations. Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said India hopes to conclude the agreement before the temporary 10% U.S. tariff on trading partners expires in July.
Negotiations remain complicated by ongoing U.S. investigations into trade practices and concerns over market access. India is also seeking guarantees against future tariff hikes, while Washington continues to push for greater access to Indian markets and increased purchases of American energy, agricultural and defence products.
