EU–India Free Trade Deal to Be Signed by End of 2026, Says EU Chief
India and the European Union are set to formally sign their landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2026, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. She shared the update after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G7 Summit in France.
The trade pact, finalized in January after years of negotiations, aims to significantly reduce tariffs on most goods traded between India and the EU. The agreement is expected to strengthen economic ties and help both sides diversify trade amid ongoing global trade tensions.
The EU estimates the deal will double its exports to India by 2032 by eliminating or lowering tariffs on 96.6% of traded goods by value. European businesses are also expected to save around €4 billion annually in duties, with the agreement likely to come into force in 2027 after formal signing.
