India Eyes New Fertiliser Deals Amid Supply Risks

India is in discussions with Russia, Belarus, and Morocco to boost fertiliser imports as global supply concerns grow due to Middle East tensions and export restrictions. As one of the world’s largest fertiliser importers, India is looking to secure adequate supplies of key nutrients like urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP) ahead of the crucial summer planting season.

Although current stockpiles remain sufficient, officials are taking precautionary steps to avoid shortages when demand peaks during June and July. India relies heavily on imports, particularly from the Middle East, for fertilisers and liquefied natural gas used in production. However, ongoing geopolitical disruptions and tighter export controls from China have raised concerns about future availability and rising costs.

The government has already issued tenders and is exploring additional suppliers, including Indonesia, while ensuring domestic fertiliser plants receive priority gas supplies. Authorities say maintaining stable fertiliser availability is critical for India’s agricultural sector, especially as global prices rise and supply chains remain uncertain.
