Iran Crisis Pushes Up Bottled Water Prices in India
India’s bottled water prices have risen sharply following the Iran crisis, with companies citing surging packaging costs driven by higher oil prices. Industry leader Bisleri has increased prices by about 11%, effectively wiping out the benefits of a recent tax cut introduced by Narendra Modi. The hike reflects growing pressure on a market where safe drinking water remains essential due to widespread groundwater contamination.
The cost of producing plastic bottles and caps has surged significantly, with polymer prices rising due to global oil market disruptions. Executives say packaging costs have jumped by as much as 70% in recent weeks, forcing companies across the sector—including major players like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo—to adjust pricing strategies in a competitive $5 billion market.
The price increases have undone earlier gains from the government’s tax reduction, which had lowered bottled water taxes from 18% to 5%. Other brands have followed suit with similar hikes, calling the move unavoidable amid geopolitical tensions and rising input costs. Industry leaders warn that unless global conditions stabilize, consumers may continue to face higher prices for basic necessities like packaged drinking water.
