Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Detained Over Martial Law

In a dramatic turn of events, South Korean law enforcement detained impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday, following his controversial imposition of martial law last month. Yoon, in a pre-recorded video message before his arrest, decried the “collapse of the rule of law” in the country but stated his intention to comply with the detention warrant to avoid clashes between law enforcement and presidential security personnel.

The detention unfolded after hundreds of officers entered Yoon’s residential compound in Seoul, encountering minimal resistance from security forces. A convoy of black SUVs, some equipped with sirens, was seen leaving the presidential compound under police escort. Yoon was subsequently transported to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials in Gwacheon, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing political turmoil.

Yoon’s legal team had sought to delay the detention by proposing voluntary questioning, but the anti-corruption agency dismissed their request. This marked the agency’s second attempt to detain Yoon, highlighting the high-stakes battle between law enforcement and the former president over his contentious actions during his tenure.
