Over 31% of world’s multidimensionality poor children live in India: OPHI

Exposing the inefficiency of the poverty eradication programs which have been being executed by the Indian government since the independence, the report, published by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, finds that over thirty-one per cent of the world’s multidimensionality poor children live in our country where huge funds are being earmarked yearly to address the issues related to the poverty. OPHI, the economic research centre under the renowned Oxford University, has conducted their survey in nearly one hundred and three countries. For the convenience of the survey, the research centre has grouped the indicators of the multidimensional poverty under three categories: standard of living, health and education.

The shocking fact is that our present situation is much worse than the Sub-Saharan African region where the authorities pay little care to the well-being of their citizens. The Multidimensional Poverty Index is a clear indicator of the country’s present state in terms of poverty, says expert. The authorities need to articulate more concrete policies to address the issues related to the multidimensional poverty prevailing in our country, adds the expert. When India becomes the home to thirty-one per cent of the world’s poor children, Nigeria and Ethiopia become the home of eight per cent and seven per cent of world’s poor kids respectively. Notably, around six per cent of the world’s multidimensionality poor people lives in Pakistan, where the government has no powerful policy to address the welfare issues.
