Zee Escalates Copyright Dispute Against Reliance-Disney’s JioStar
India’s Zee Entertainment has asked the Delhi High Court to initiate contempt proceedings against JioStar, alleging the Reliance-Disney joint venture continued using Zee’s copyrighted music and songs despite a court injunction. Zee claims JioStar showed “wilful disobedience” by continuing to use the content in programmes broadcast on its platforms.
The dispute began in April, when Zee sought $3 million in damages over 50 alleged copyright violations. In May, the Delhi High Court ordered JioStar not to use, publish, broadcast, stream or upload Zee’s licensed works. JioStar had previously said the alleged infringements were unintentional and residual, adding that it had removed a substantial amount of Zee content after licensing agreements expired.
In its latest filing dated September 21, Zee cited six instances between May and July that it says demonstrate continued use of its copyrighted works. JioStar declined to comment. The court has asked JioStar to respond to the allegations, with the matter expected to be heard again in December. The case comes amid growing competition over content rights as India’s media and streaming sector consolidates.
