Winter Fog Grounds Flights at Delhi Airport
Dense winter fog caused major disruptions at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday, leading to the cancellation of over 60 flights and delays for more than 250 others. Airlines including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet issued advisories to passengers as visibility dropped sharply, marking the first significant fog spell of the season across the Delhi-NCR region and affecting multiple airports in North India.
IndiGo cancelled 36 departures from Delhi, while Air India scrapped 19 flights as precautionary measures. Air India Express and Akasa Air also warned passengers of possible delays and cancellations. Although runway visibility improved by late morning, the airport cautioned that schedules could still face knock-on effects throughout the day, with aircraft not equipped with advanced CAT III landing systems particularly affected.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) issued a fog advisory for North Indian airports, urging travellers to check flight statuses before heading to terminals. Airport authorities coordinated closely with airlines to manage operations and assist passengers, emphasizing that flights would resume once conditions were safe for takeoff and landing in the dense winter fog.
