“We Are Indians First”: Singer Adnan Sami Lashes Out At Jagan Reddy

On Wednesday, SS Rajamouli’s RRR team received congratulations from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for winning a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
Taking to his social media handle, Chief Minister Reddy tweeted, “The #Telugu flag is flying high! On behalf of all of #AndhraPradesh, I congratulate @mmkeeravaani, @ssrajamouli, @tarak9999, @AlwaysRamCharan and the entire team of @RRRMovie. We are incredibly proud of you! #GoldenGlobes2023.”

Adnan Sami disagreed with the Andhra Chief Minister’s congratulations, telling him that “we are Indians” first and that the “separatist attitude” is bad.

Replying to the Chief Minister’s tweet, Mr Sami wrote, “Telugu flag? You mean INDIAN flag right? We are Indians first & so kindly stop separating yourself from the rest of the country…Especially internationally, we are one country! This ‘separatist’ attitude is highly unhealthy as we saw in 1947!!! Thank you…Jai HIND.”

On social media, opinions on Mr. Sami’s message were varied. While some agreed with him, others from the southern state claimed that RRR’s victory had given Andhra Pradesh a great deal of pride. They added that Bollywood entertainers had previously looked down on Telugu films but now wanted to be a part of them because the sector had grown to be so successful.

Indian citizenship was granted to Mr. Sami on January 1st, 2016.
One of the two categories in which RRR, the blockbuster film from SS Rajamouli, was nominated for Best Original Song was for Naatu Naatu. But Argentina’s 1985 film, which won for Best Non-English Language Film, beat it out.
