Vizag Set to Become ‘AI-Patnam’ with Google’s Mega Data Centre
Google has laid the foundation for a massive $15 billion AI data centre in Visakhapatnam, marking a major step in India’s push toward global AI leadership. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the city is poised to transform into “AI-Patnam,” drawing parallels with Hyderabad’s rise as “Cyberabad” under N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The project, supported by Adani Group and Bharti Airtel, will also include a major subsea cable network connecting India to the US, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia. This infrastructure aims to position India as a secure and reliable global hub for data and AI systems amid shifting global supply chains.
While highlighting the opportunity, Vaishnaw also outlined key challenges for the initiative, including local server manufacturing, energy efficiency, and sustainable water use. The project reflects India’s intent to lead in emerging technologies like AI, semiconductors, and space, ensuring it does not miss future technological revolutions.
