Tharoor Dismisses Trump’s Mediation Claim in India-Pakistan Ceasefire

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has criticised former US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the United States mediated the recent ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan. Tharoor stated that the situation was driven by constructive diplomatic dialogue rather than formal mediation. He described the sequence of events as “highly unusual” and said such unilateral claims were unprecedented in international diplomacy.
Trump had announced on May 10 that the US played a key role in brokering a “full and immediate ceasefire” between the two nations, a claim made shortly before both countries confirmed the agreement. However, Tharoor clarified that while diplomatic calls were made—including between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary Rubio, who also spoke with Pakistan’s foreign minister—this did not constitute a formal mediation request by India. “India never asked for mediation,” he said, underscoring that the nation’s actions were a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
Meanwhile, India reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire but maintained full military readiness. Commodore Raghu R Nair stated that the Indian armed forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force—remain vigilant and prepared to defend the nation’s sovereignty. He warned that any future misadventure by Pakistan would be met with a decisive response, highlighting India’s commitment to national security despite the ceasefire understanding.
