Tata Sons Says Air India Turnaround Could Take Up to a Decade
India’s Tata Sons has said that the full turnaround of Air India could take up to a decade, extending the timeline originally outlined under the airline’s five-year Vihaan.AI transformation plan. Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the recovery will require significant time due to supply chain disruptions, modernization of legacy systems, fleet upgrades, cultural transformation, and the expansion of the airline’s technical and operational workforce.
The revised outlook comes as Air India continues to face major challenges, including airspace closures, rising fuel costs linked to tensions in West Asia, and the aftermath of last year’s fatal plane crash. The company is also preparing for a leadership change, with CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson set to step down on September 30 after completing his notice period. A successor has not yet been announced.
Financially, Air India reported a wider net loss of ₹222.38 billion for the financial year ending March 2026, compared to ₹108.59 billion the previous year. While India’s aviation sector has recovered strongly since the pandemic, airlines continue to face profitability pressures from high operating costs, ongoing supply chain issues, and intense market competition.
