Tata Electronics Faces Pollution Allegations at Apple iPhone Components Plant in Tamil Nadu
India’s Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has accused Tata Electronics of contaminating groundwater near its iPhone components factory in Hosur, alleging that wastewater discharged from the facility affected nearby agricultural land and open wells. The regulator issued a warning notice on May 25, stating that repeated inspections between December 2025 and May 2026 found wastewater overflowing from a rainwater harvesting pond into surrounding farmland.
According to the notice, Tata failed to implement corrective measures despite earlier instructions from pollution authorities. The regulator has asked the company to explain why the plant should not face penalties, including a power disconnection and possible closure for alleged environmental violations.
Tata Electronics denied any wrongdoing, saying an independent study conducted by an accredited laboratory found the company to be fully compliant with environmental regulations. The company said it remains committed to responsible environmental practices and has responded to the authorities. The development comes as Tata plays a key role in Apple’s efforts to expand iPhone manufacturing in India and reduce dependence on China.
