Suzuki Asks Indian Suppliers to Cut Production Days for Maintenance
Suzuki Motor has asked its Indian suppliers to stop production for one day each week to allow machinery maintenance, according to two people familiar with the matter. The move is aimed at reducing unexpected factory stoppages and maintaining quality as the company prepares to increase production in India.
The directive comes as Maruti Suzuki plans to raise annual production to about 4 million vehicles by 2030, from around 2.4 million currently. Suzuki has also asked suppliers to plan for a six-day production schedule and aims for an operating model of 20 hours a day, six days a week by September 2027, allowing four hours of machine downtime each night and a full day for maintenance.
The change could increase costs for suppliers, many of which traditionally operate machinery continuously throughout the week to maximise capacity. Suppliers may need additional production capacity and investment in machinery to compensate for the scheduled downtime, while Suzuki also prepares to expand exports and introduce new powertrain and safety technologies in India.
