Supreme Court Stays ₹5,712-Crore GST Notice Against Paytm’s First Games
In a significant relief to fintech giant One97 Communications, the Supreme Court has stayed a ₹5,712-crore GST demand notice issued to its real money gaming platform, First Games. The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), New Delhi, had sent the show cause notice (SCN) to the platform in April 2025, prompting legal action by the company.
According to a regulatory filing on Saturday, First Games informed One97 Communications on May 24, 2025, that the apex court had stayed the proceedings related to the SCN. The stay was granted on May 23, 2025, following a writ petition filed by First Games challenging the validity of the notice.
One97 Communications, the parent company behind the Paytm brand, clarified that the tax dispute is not specific to First Games but is an industry-wide issue currently under review by the Supreme Court. The case is being closely watched by the real money gaming sector, which has come under increasing scrutiny from tax authorities in recent months.
