Supreme Court Orders Probe Into Reliance Foundation’s Vantara Wildlife Park

India’s Supreme Court has ordered an independent investigation into Vantara, the wildlife rescue park run by Reliance Foundation, citing public interest petitions that raised concerns over alleged unlawful animal acquisitions and mistreatment. While the court noted that the allegations lacked supporting evidence, it said an impartial inquiry was necessary as complaints claimed authorities had failed to discharge their duties.

The inquiry panel, to be headed by a former Supreme Court judge, will review the acquisition of animals—particularly elephants—examine allegations of creating a private collection, and assess compliance with the Wild Life Protection Act. The panel has been directed to submit its findings by September 12. Vantara, located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, said it will fully cooperate with the investigation and reiterated its commitment to animal rescue, rehabilitation, and welfare.

Launched by Anant Ambani, son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, Vantara houses more than 150,000 animals across 2,000 species and includes a 998-acre elephant welfare trust. The facility, which hosted part of Anant Ambani’s high-profile pre-wedding celebrations last year, has also received endorsement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described it as a safe haven for animals promoting ecological sustainability.
