Snowfall, Rain In Sinking Joshimath Adds To People’s Struggle In Relief Camps

The residents who are residing in temporary relief camps due to soil subsidence in Joshimath, the “sinking town,” today struggled even more as a result of the snowfall and rain that fell in several regions of Uttarakhand.

Along with Joshimath, which is around 6,000 feet above sea level, many other well-known locations in the higher elevations of the Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts, such as Badrinath, the ski resort of Auli, Kedarnath, Hemkund Sahib, Nanda Devi National Park, and the Valley of Flowers, also experienced snowfall, according to officials.

According to the District Disaster Management office, among the 47 villages in the Chamoli district hit by snowfall, 19 are in the Ghat sub-division, 13 in Joshimath, 8 in Gairsain, and 7 in the Chamoli sub-division.

The first snowfall of the season fell in Mussoorie, a well-known tourist destination, while Dehradun also awoke to an early morning shower. The state’s plains, including the districts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, were shrouded in fog.

According to officials, snowfall in the high-altitude regions is still occurring, while the majority of the plains remain cloudy.

Due to the terrible weather, Joshimath’s demolition of dangerous hotels and homes has temporarily been put on hold, according to Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana.

Officials claim that 849 homes in Joshimath have developed cracks as a result of soil subsidence, and 258 residents have been relocated to makeshift relief facilities.
