Shubman Gill Urges India to Improve Fitness Ahead of 2027 World Cup
India captain Shubman Gill has stressed the need for improved player fitness after England secured a 2-1 ODI series victory. Gill said frequent injuries prevented India from fielding their strongest playing XI, forcing the team to constantly change combinations throughout the series.
Several key players, including Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Washington Sundar, missed matches due to injuries. Gill warned that such fitness concerns could prove costly at next year’s ODI World Cup, where teams must maintain consistency over an extended tournament.
Reflecting on the series defeat, Gill also admitted India’s inexperienced bowling attack struggled under pressure after England posted 387 runs in the deciding match. He said the team needs to improve both fitness and execution to compete consistently at the highest level ahead of the World Cup.
