Saregama to Acquire Stake in Bhansali Productions, Eyes Majority Control by FY2030
Saregama India Ltd on Tuesday announced it will acquire 9,960 shares of Bhansali Productions for $35.8 million, marking a strategic investment in the renowned Bollywood film studio founded by acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. While the exact percentage of ownership remains undisclosed, the music label said it plans to increase its holding to a 51% majority stake in Bhansali Productions by fiscal year 2030.
Founded in 1996, Bhansali Productions is known for critically and commercially acclaimed films such as Devdas and Bajirao Mastani, along with the recent period drama series Heeramandi on Netflix. Under the agreement, Bhansali Productions will exclusively license all future film music to Saregama through a pre-agreed pricing structure, ensuring a steady pipeline of music content and eliminating competitive bidding.
The move comes amid a challenging phase for Bollywood, with theatrical releases facing mixed responses and growing competition from streaming platforms. Saregama said the transaction is expected to be earnings-accretive by fiscal 2027. For fiscal 2025, the company reported consolidated revenue of ₹11.71 billion and a net profit of ₹2.04 billion.
