Salman Khan: Hosts should never ‘cross the line,’ and humour should never be ‘below the belt’

At a press conference on Monday, actor Salman Khan said that a host should be “sensitive” and not cross the line. His remarks came in the wake of Will Smith slapping presenter Chris Rock on the stage after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, at the Oscars.

Salman, who hosts Bigg Boss and will be hosting IIFA, was asked if hosts should be cautious about what they say on stage because the audience has become increasingly sensitive. “It’s critical for a host to be sensitive,” he said. Humor should never be below the belt and should always be above it. I’ve hosted shows like Bigg Boss, Dus Ka Dum, and a slew of live stage performances.”

Along with Maniesh Paul, Ananya Panday, and Varun Dhawan, Salman was at a press conference for the IIFA Awards 2022. “Whenever I’ve hosted Bigg Boss and something goes wrong with one of the contestants that makes me angry or disappointed, I say it out loud in the show,” he continued, “but I know there’s a limit.” At the end of the day, the contestants are also living in the house and must perform, so practise patience and sensitivity when dealing with them. I don’t go overboard. Whatever I have to say, I say it on Saturday, and then I’m back to normal on Sunday.Even the contestants are aware that a blabbermouth or a loudmouth is disliked by all. It will not help their careers if they blabber excessively. No one wants to work with a blabbermouth in the film industry.”

At Monday’s Oscars, Smith slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance. The Academy has announced that it will investigate the matter and has issued a press statement condemning Smith’s actions. Rock has decided not to press charges against him, so the actor has issued a public apology to him.
