“Rohit Sharma Should Be Kicking Himself”: Gautam Gambhir On India Captain’s Long Century Drought

In the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram, India’s captain Rohit Sharma was thrown out after reaching 42. The 35-year-old has now gone 50 innings in international cricket without a century. Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir has now expressed alarm over his century-long dry spell. Speaking on Star Sports, Gambhir suggested that Rohit must be kicking himself and compared his predicament to that of star batsman Virat Kohli, who had gone more than three years without recording a century.

“We should talk in the same phase. Virat Kohli didn’t get a hundred for three and a half years. I think Rohit should be kicking himself. It will be equally hard on Rohit Sharma as well. 50 innings are a lot, it’s not like he didn’t get a hundred in one or two games. If you look at the last (ODI) World Cup, one thing is missing from his game and it’s the ability to get those hundreds,” Gambhir said during the mid innings show.

Gambhir believes that even if Rohit has been doing well, the Indian skipper needs to possess the same level of fervour as Kohli, who has been in superb form.

“Rohit Sharma looks in good touch no doubt about that. However, he needs to convert these starts into big knocks. Virat has found his form, and now he needs to show the same hunger. His and Virat’s form will be key if India want to all the way this time,” he added.

At the Oval in September 2021, against England, Rohit last recorded a century.

Comparatively, Kohli has three century in his last four ODI innings. Last year, he broke his first T20I tonne against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup, ending his century drought.
