Rahul Gandhi Meets Farmers Over India-US Trade Deal
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is set to meet farmers to discuss the India-US trade deal, which he has criticized as “anti-farmer.” He alleged that the agreement benefits American farmers at the expense of Indian cotton, soya, apple, and fruit producers, claiming it undermines food security and puts Prime Minister Narendra Modi under a “chokehold” by US President Donald Trump. Gandhi vowed to stand with farmers despite potential legal challenges.
In response, union ministers defended the trade pact, stating that the interests of Indian farmers are fully protected. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted that key crops like wheat, rice, millets, soybean, corn, fruits, and spices are safeguarded, and new export opportunities for cotton, basmati rice, tea, and marine products will boost farmers’ incomes.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also rejected Gandhi’s allegations, calling them baseless and asserting that government schemes under Modi have empowered farmers. Both ministers accused Gandhi of spreading misinformation and misleading farmers for political gain.
