PMKVY Records Just 7% Placement Rate
India’s flagship skill development programme, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), has recorded placements for only 7% of trained candidates, highlighting the continuing gap between skill development and employment. Government dashboard data showed that 200,224 candidates were placed out of 2.85 million trained candidates as of August 28.
The data also reveals significant dropout rates. Of the 3.54 million candidates enrolled under the scheme, around 683,000, or more than 19%, were recorded as dropouts. Meanwhile, 2.04 million candidates had been assessed and 1.95 million had received certification. Placement outcomes varied considerably across sectors, with telecom recording the highest rate at 17.5%, while management reported just 1.1%.
The placement figures cover the Short-Term Training components of PMKVY 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Under PMKVY 4.0, placement tracking has been replaced by one-year post-certification monitoring to capture wider outcomes such as employment, higher education and further training. The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is responsible for tracking these outcomes through calls and digital tools.
