PM Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport, India’s First Fully Digital Aviation Hub
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport on Wednesday (October 8), marking a major milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure. Developed under a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO, the state-of-the-art greenfield airport places Mumbai among global cities like London, New York, and Tokyo that operate multiple international airports. Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, the facility is expected to generate over 200,000 jobs across aviation, logistics, IT, hospitality, and real estate sectors.
Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport will initially handle 20 million passengers annually with one terminal and runway, eventually expanding to four terminals and two runways capable of serving up to 155 million passengers each year. Commercial operations are expected to begin in December, with IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air among the first carriers to commence services. Around 40 percent of the initial traffic will be international, gradually increasing to 75 percent as the airport ramps up operations.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport is India’s first fully digital airport, offering AI-enabled terminals, online baggage drop, and digital immigration services. Designed as a multimodal transport hub, it integrates connectivity via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, metro lines, expressways, and waterway routes. Inside, passengers can enjoy digital art installations, expansive retail spaces, lounges for 500 VIP travellers, and an 80-room transit hotel, redefining the air travel experience for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
