Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the remembrance celebrations of the Chauri Chaura incident in Uttar Pradesh’s  Gorakhpur district where he released a postage stamp via video link devoted to the incident.

Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh on February 4th 1922 witnessed a large group of protesters participating in the Non-cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, clash with police officials who opened fire. The demonstrators retributed by attacking and setting fire to a police station, killing all of its residents. The incident led to several casualties including the death of three civilians and  22 policemen.  This year the UP government has planned to celebrate in all 75 districts of the state in memory of the martyrs.

Modi said that it was “unfortunate”, the martyrs of this historic event have not been talked about as much as they should have been. “Although they have not been given significance in the pages of history, their blood is in the soil of the country and keeps inspiring us,” he added.

Amidst growing problems in Uttar Pradesh over the three Farm Acts, PM Modi said the farmers have been behind the progress of the country and that they also play an important role in the Chauri Chaura struggle.
