Petronet LNG Expects Full Qatar Supply After Middle East Tensions Ease
India’s leading gas importer, Petronet LNG, has expressed confidence that it will receive its full contracted supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar once geopolitical tensions in the Middle East stabilise. Speaking on Monday, Chief Executive A.K. Singh stated that the company remains optimistic despite recent disruptions. Qatar, India’s largest LNG supplier, is contracted to deliver 7.5 million metric tons annually to Petronet, translating to roughly 9–10 cargoes each month.
The supply chain was significantly impacted in March following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Qatar’s LNG infrastructure. Iran reportedly struck two of Qatar’s 14 production trains, prompting Qatar to declare force majeure and halt certain deliveries. As a result, Petronet has not been receiving cargoes from the affected facilities, and the supplier has indicated that repairs could sideline up to 12.8 million metric tons of LNG annually for the next three to five years.
Despite the setback, Petronet LNG is continuing to expand its infrastructure to strengthen future supply resilience. The company is currently constructing three new LNG storage tanks, including two at a new terminal in eastern India and one at its Kochi facility. Additionally, it is scouting land near its Dahej terminal in Gujarat to build four more storage tanks, reinforcing its long-term strategy to meet growing energy demand.
