Body Spray Ads With “Rape Jokes” Face Watchdog’s Action

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has stated that an advertisement by Layer’r Shot is in “serious breach” of their code and against the public interest, in response to mounting outrage.

After a number of users tagged the ASCI on Twitter, they were asked to “”Thank you for tagging us,” the self-regulatory organisation wrote, “take it off the air.” The advertisement is against the public interest and violates the ASCI Code. We took immediate action and notified the advertiser that the ad would be suspended pending an investigation.”

The two advertisements for Layer’r Shot’s body spray have gotten a lot of backlash online. A group of men and a woman appear in both videos, the first in a room and the second in a grocery store. Several viewers found the men’s joke about taking a “shot” at the woman to be offensive and “disgusting.”

As one user put it, “This is just too bad and disgusting, @ascionline. Also, it’s provoking. Please make certain that these are taken from the air. #Ads #asci”

During the first Test match between England and New Zealand, the advertisements will be broadcast on Sony Liv.
