OpenAI Unveils Free AI Shopping Tool for Personalized Gift Guides
OpenAI has introduced a new AI-powered shopping assistant within ChatGPT for users in the United States, designed to create customised holiday gift guides. Available free to both paid and free users until January, the tool asks clarifying questions to understand preferences such as budget, size, and colour, before offering tailored product suggestions. It typically recommends 10–15 items at a time, allowing users to refine results with options like “more like this” or “not interested.”
The system pulls reviews from multiple online sources and prioritises credible, organic content rather than paid promotions. However, OpenAI researchers acknowledge that accurately distinguishing unbiased reviews remains challenging. Users are encouraged to verify product details on retailer sites, as the AI may occasionally misstate elements such as pricing or availability.
Best suited for categories requiring detailed comparisons—like electronics, beauty, kitchen appliances, home and garden, and outdoor products—the tool operates separate from ChatGPT’s checkout feature integrated with Stripe for selected Etsy and Shopify retailers. As competition in AI-driven shopping intensifies, companies like Perplexity AI are also working to shape buying decisions through AI-powered research tools.
