OpenAI Reportedly Eyes Biometric-Verified Social Network to Curb Bots

OpenAI is reportedly exploring the launch of a new social media platform designed to tackle the growing problem of bot-driven spam and misinformation online. According to a Forbes report, the platform is still in its early development stages and aims to offer a human-only social experience through advanced verification methods. If launched, it could position itself as a challenger to major platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok, where automated accounts increasingly distort engagement and content credibility.

Sources cited by Forbes suggest the platform may rely on “proof of personhood” using biometric verification, potentially similar to Apple’s Face ID or the Worldcoin Orb system. The rumoured approach could involve eyeball or facial scans to generate a unique digital identity for each user, ensuring every account belongs to a real human. While this could significantly reduce bots, critics warn that centralized handling of biometric data by a private tech company raises privacy and security concerns.

The move would align with OpenAI’s broader push into consumer-facing products, including its AI video tool Sora and the steady expansion of social-style features within ChatGPT. While biometric verification could offer a unique edge in the crowded social media market, analysts note that breaking into a space dominated by entrenched platforms will be a major challenge, despite growing frustration with bots across existing networks.
