ONGC to Build 13 Million-Barrel Strategic Oil Reserve in Mangalore
India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has announced plans to build a new strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) with a capacity of 1.75 million metric tons, or about 13 million barrels, in Mangalore, Karnataka. The move is aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security following recent global supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions.
India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, is expanding its emergency crude storage capacity through partnerships with countries such as the UAE and Japan. The new facility will add to the country’s existing strategic reserves at Mangalore, Padur, and Visakhapatnam, which currently have a combined storage capacity of 5.33 million metric tons.
The government is also planning additional strategic storage projects in Odisha and Padur to improve long-term energy resilience. ONGC has not yet disclosed the project’s cost or completion timeline, but the expansion is expected to reduce India’s vulnerability to global oil supply disruptions while supporting future energy needs.
