Om Birla to succeed Sumitra Mahajan as Lok Sabha Speaker
The BJP-led NDA is expected to nominate Om Birla as the successor of Sumitra Mahajan, the outgoing Lok Sabha speaker. As per a media report, his name will be moved in the parliament by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the proposal will be backed by Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and Shiv Sena leader Arvind Sawant.
Veteran BJP leader Om Birla, who has held several prominent positions, including the post of the member of Rajasthan legislative assembly, in the state as well as in the national level, is a two-time BJP lawmaker from the Indian state of Rajasthan.
Usually, senior parliamentarians are selected as the speakers of the Lower House of the Indian parliament.
The outgoing speaker is a senior BJP leader and is one of the few speakers who have earned the respect of both the ruling and the opposition alike with her impartial way of handling the activities of the house.
The speaker election will begin shortly after the completion of the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected parliamentarians.
Proving as a successful successor to one of the most respected speakers the country has ever seen is not an easy task, but is a huge responsibility. What actually has been offered to Om Birla is that.
Anyway, his selection as the NDA’s nominee has come as a huge surprise. It seems that the NDA’s allies are happy with the move.
