Oil Price Surge Sends Rupee to Record Low, Hits Indian Markets
Indian financial markets weakened as a sharp rise in global crude oil prices pushed the rupee to a record low and pressured equities and bonds. Brent crude climbed to around $100 per barrel amid escalating Middle East tensions, raising concerns about India’s energy import costs and broader economic impact. The rupee slipped 0.3% to a new lifetime low, though central bank intervention helped prevent steeper losses.
Equity markets also reacted negatively, with the Nifty 50 index falling about 1% while yields on India’s benchmark 10-year government bond edged higher. Traders said the Reserve Bank of India stepped in to stabilise the currency near key levels, but analysts warned sustained high oil prices could force policymakers to allow further depreciation if pressure continues. Hedging costs and currency volatility indicators also climbed, reflecting rising market uncertainty.
Regional markets faced similar stress as Asian currencies and stocks declined amid fears of prolonged energy supply disruptions. Analysts noted that energy-import-dependent economies like India remain especially vulnerable due to reliance on Middle Eastern oil flows and export demand risks. Higher crude prices are expected to intensify inflation concerns while increasing growth risks for the Indian economy.
