Nestlé, Zydus and Abbott Face Scrutiny Over Children’s Product Claims
India’s food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has issued notices to Nestlé India, Zydus Wellness, Abbott Healthcare and others over promotional claims involving products for infants and children. The action comes as India increases scrutiny of food safety and considers stricter rules on added sugars in infant foods and front-of-pack warning labels.
FSSAI asked Nestlé India to provide evidence supporting digestive and immune-system benefit claims made for its Lactogen Pro 1 Powder and NAN Excella Pro Stage 1 infant formula. Zydus Wellness was asked to provide scientific justification for claims promoting Complan, including its tagline, “grow taller, faster. clinically proven 2X growth.” Nestlé said it had already submitted a detailed response to earlier concerns raised by the regulator.
The regulator also issued notices to Abbott Healthcare, Nestlé India and social media influencer Ira Fathima over an Instagram reel promoting infant milk substitutes. Abbott said it was neither involved in nor aware of the content before receiving the notice, adding that it did not endorse the claims made in the reel. The company said it had shared this information with the regulator.
