Nestlé Seeks Industry Consultation on India’s Food Labelling Rules
Nestlé has called for India to consult food manufacturers while developing front-of-pack health labelling rules, saying industry participation could help ensure the regulations are based on scientific evidence. CEO Philipp Navratil said the company supports front-of-pack labels for products high in sugar, salt and fat, but believes manufacturers should be part of the discussion.
The issue has gained renewed attention after Reuters reported that major food companies and industry groups had opposed proposed warning labels in India. Consumer groups and health experts have since criticised the industry’s role in shaping food policy. India’s Supreme Court has also criticised delays in introducing prominent warning labels on packaged foods, while the country’s food safety regulator has not responded to requests for comment.
Activists argue that companies should not have a role in deciding public health labelling standards. The debate has intensified as concerns grow over the sugar and fat content of packaged foods in India, with comparisons showing that some products sold in India can contain significantly more sugar than similar products in other markets. The controversy highlights growing pressure on global food companies and Indian authorities to strengthen transparency and protect consumer health.
