Name change controversy following demolition; Delhi Corporation says Mohammedpur renamed to Madhavpuram
A name change controversy has erupted in Delhi following the evacuation of slum dwellers in Jahangirpuri. The Delhi BJP unit came out demanding a change of place names during the Mughal period. The BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation has announced that Mohammedpur in south Delhi has been renamed as Madhavpuram.
Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta and BJP leaders set up a board to welcome Madhavpuram. But the name change has not yet been approved by the Delhi government. Roads and villages can be renamed only with the approval of the Nomenclature Authority. Meanwhile, the BJP state unit has written to the Delhi government asking it to change the names of 40 more places in Delhi.
It wants to change the names of 40 places, including House Khas, Begumpur and Sheikh Sarai. In the letter, the BJP claims that these names are the remnants of slavery and that the natives demand it. The BJP is discussing the name change ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Delhi.
