The Congress is releasing its list of candidates for the first time in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP and SP are just preparing to release their candidates. Prior to that, the Congress had released its candidate list earlier than usual. In 2017, the highly controversial Unnao rape case came to light. The complainant had alleged that the MLA had raped a 19-year-old girl who had come to the MLA’s office in search of work. The case came to national attention when the girl tried to commit suicide in front of Kuldeep Sengar’s house. Kuldeep Sengar’s brother had brutally beaten to death his father, who was questioned for raping the girl. This provoked huge protests across the country.

With the result of the last election, the Congress, which had lost just seven seats, was reduced to the least influential party in the state. Rahul and Priyanka have been actively trying to bring the controversy surrounding the Hathras rape case and the Unnao rape to national attention. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections to 403 Assembly constituencies will be held in seven phases. The election will be held from February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27 and March 3 and 7.
