Morbi Ceramic Hub Shuts Down as Gas Crisis Deepens
India’s ceramics hub in Morbi has been hit hard by the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict, with around 550 factories halting production due to severe gas shortages. The town, which produces nearly 80% of India’s ceramics including tiles and sanitaryware, has seen operations disrupted as supplies of propane and natural gas—essential for kiln firing—tighten sharply.
The ₹750 billion industry relies on continuous high-temperature processes, making it highly vulnerable to fuel disruptions. While some units using piped gas remain partially operational, nearly 80% of manufacturers—especially larger ones—have suspended work. Industry officials say the shutdown could last until mid-April, highlighting the scale of the crisis and its impact on exports to markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
The gas shortage is also affecting smaller businesses across India. In Kolkata, Nahoum and Sons temporarily shut operations, while in Delhi restaurants and street vendors are facing reduced hours and sharp revenue declines due to limited LPG supply. The disruption is now rippling across industries, impacting production, pricing, and everyday business activity nationwide.
