Modi Calls for Fuel Saving, Fewer Imports to Protect Forex Reserves
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged Indians to adopt fuel-saving measures and reduce non-essential spending as rising global energy prices put pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves. He encouraged people to revive work-from-home practices and online meetings, saying reduced commuting would help cut fuel consumption and save foreign currency.
Modi also advised citizens to rely more on public transport, including metro services, and to carpool whenever possible. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, has so far avoided raising diesel and petrol prices despite the recent global spike in energy costs.
The prime minister further appealed to people to avoid unnecessary gold purchases and overseas travel for at least a year to reduce pressure on forex reserves. He also called on families to lower cooking oil consumption and urged farmers to cut fertilizer use by up to half, describing these measures as both economically and socially responsible.
