Mitchell Century Powers New Zealand to Series-Levelling ODI Win Over India
Daryl Mitchell produced a commanding unbeaten century to steer New Zealand to a seven-wicket victory over India in the second One-Day International on Wednesday, leveling the three-match series at 1-1. Chasing 285 in Rajkot, New Zealand reached the target with 15 balls to spare after electing to field first and restricting India to 284 for seven.
Mitchell anchored the chase with an unbeaten 131 off 117 deliveries after New Zealand slipped to 46 for two early on. He rebuilt the innings with Will Young, sharing a crucial 162-run partnership that took the game away from India. Mitchell, dropped on 80, went on to register his eighth ODI hundred, while Young narrowly missed a century with 87 before falling to Kuldeep Yadav.
India’s efforts with the ball proved insufficient despite early breakthroughs, as Mitchell and Glenn Phillips calmly finished the chase, marking New Zealand’s highest successful ODI run chase on Indian soil. Earlier, KL Rahul carried India’s batting with an unbeaten 112, but New Zealand’s disciplined bowling and dominant middle-overs batting ensured they sealed a comprehensive win ahead of the series decider in Indore.
