Medicover India Hospitals Target Profitability in 18 Months
Swedish healthcare provider Medicover expects all 25 of its hospitals in India to become profitable within the next 18 months, supported by improving occupancy and growing demand for specialised healthcare. Currently, 19 hospitals in its network are profitable, while the company aims to increase its core profit margin from 14% to 20–25% over the next 12 to 18 months.
Medicover India operates around 6,000 beds and plans to raise occupancy to about 4,000 beds during the next 18 months. The company will use funds from KKR’s €1.2 billion acquisition of its India business to expand and strengthen existing facilities, including increasing the number of operational beds. The business is expected to receive a new name after regulatory approvals for the transaction.
KKR’s investment adds to growing private-equity interest in India’s healthcare sector, driven by increasing demand, chronic diseases and wider insurance coverage. Other major healthcare players, including Apollo Hospitals and Manipal, are also expanding their hospital networks through new and existing facilities, highlighting the growing competition and investment in India’s healthcare market.
