“Mallikarjun Kharge Sir Is My Leader…”: Shashi Tharoor On Congress Poll

The candidate for Congress president, Shashi Tharoor, has clarified recent remarks in which he claimed that some party members believed there to be an official candidate. It was perceived as making reference to Mallikarjun Kharge, the second contender in the race for president of the Congress, which is being eagerly watched by both party insiders and the general public because the victor will be the first non-Gandhi party chief in more than 20 years.

“My leader is Kharge Sir. We are not at war.” In Guwahati, Assam, where he had travelled to garner support for his candidacy, Mr. Tharoor declared, “I am the candidate of change in the Congress.”

“People who supported me are not rebel or against the Gandhis…This is a wrong notion. The Gandhis are always with the Congress, so are we. We are contesting the election with the spirit that whoever wins this elections, it will be a victory of the Congress,” Mr Tharoor said, indicating a conciliatory approach.

Mr. Tharoor stated that one of the actions he would do if elected Congress chairman is to attempt to prevent Congress leaders from leaving and joining the opposition BJP. The Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, stated, “If I am elected President, this will be a significant issue that I will solve.”

Older party officials are with Mr. Kharge, but younger leaders and party members are giving me great support, he said.
