Mahindra Unveils Seven-Seater Electric SUV XEV 9S as India’s EV Push Accelerates
Mahindra has launched its newest seven-seater electric SUV, the XEV 9S, priced from around ₹20 lakh ($22,409), marking a major step in its bid to strengthen its foothold in India’s fast-growing EV market dominated by Tata Motors. The launch comes amid a sharp rise in electric car adoption in the country, with sales surpassing 100,000 units so far this year compared with just over 23,000 last year, according to government data.
As part of its broader EV strategy, Mahindra will invest an additional ₹20 billion in the XEV 9S and a refreshed BE 6 model, contributing to a total planned investment of ₹160 billion through fiscal 2027. The company introduced six variants of the XEV 9S, with the top model priced at about $33,000 and offering a range of 500 km. Bookings open on January 14, and deliveries begin January 23. Analysts say the launch could help Mahindra capture 5,000–10,000 units annually due to limited seven-seater EV options in the market.
Mahindra aims for electric vehicles to make up at least 20% of its SUV sales by 2027, having already sold over 30,000 electric SUVs between March and October this year. Production of its earlier EV models, XEV 9E and BE6, currently stands at 4,000–5,000 units per month, with plans to double capacity from April 2026. With 80% of EV buyers new to the brand, analysts note that Mahindra’s electric lineup is driving fresh demand. The launch also intensifies competition with Tata Motors, Hyundai, and others as India targets 30% EV penetration by 2030 despite challenges such as high upfront costs and uneven charging infrastructure.
