Maharashtra Partners with Elon Musk’s Starlink to Expand Satellite Internet Access
Maharashtra has become the first Indian state to sign a partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide satellite-based high-speed internet connectivity in remote and underserved regions. A Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed in Mumbai on Wednesday in the presence of Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Under this collaboration, Starlink will deploy its satellite internet services across rural communities, tribal schools, primary health centres, coastal and forest outposts, emergency services, and key public infrastructure. The initiative will particularly benefit aspirational districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Dharashiv, and Washim — helping bridge the last-mile digital gap.
Fadnavis said the partnership marks a major step toward a “future-ready Maharashtra” and strengthens the Digital Maharashtra mission while supporting national goals under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision. The agreement, however, is subject to regulatory approvals from the Department of Telecommunications before rollout begins.
