Maharashtra FDA Suspends Licences of 4 Mumbai Food Businesses

Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences and registrations of four food businesses in Mumbai after inspections uncovered serious hygiene and food safety violations. Officials found active cockroach and pest infestations, repeatedly reused and darkened cooking oil, excessive use of artificial colours and MSG, and heavily soiled cooking equipment.

The inspected establishments included Akshay Caterers at Garware Institute, Craftpac Hospitality at Jio World Drive, Marion Hotel and Restaurant in Dadar West, and Bhagwati Stores in Chembur. Inspectors also found cooked rice stored uncovered, damp walls, fungal growth, condensation and stagnant wastewater. The FDA flagged possible cross-contamination between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food due to shared preparation areas, cutting boards and equipment.

In a separate action in Akola, the FDA seized more than 7,000 kg of refined soyabean oil worth nearly Rs 11.83 lakh from two firms over suspected adulteration and other regulatory deficiencies. The licences of both businesses were also suspended. The FDA said the inspections are part of a statewide drive to improve food safety and warned that businesses violating regulations could face strict legal action.
