Live Events Boom Drives Hotel Demand Across India
India’s hotel industry is witnessing a surge in demand as international music concerts and major sporting events draw large crowds, reflecting a growing shift among younger consumers toward spending on experiences rather than luxury goods. Global artists such as Dua Lipa and Ye are increasingly adding India to their tour schedules, helping hotels fill rooms at a time when corporate travel demand from IT companies has begun to soften due to tighter spending.
The impact of these large-scale events has been particularly visible in host cities. Coldplay’s concert in Ahmedabad last year attracted tens of thousands of fans, making it the city’s busiest day for metro traffic and air arrivals while generating around $70 million in economic activity. Hotel executives say such events are significantly boosting occupancy levels and creating new revenue opportunities for the hospitality sector.
Industry experts note that India’s event and exhibition market, currently valued at about $5.69 billion, is expected to expand to $9.04 billion by 2031. Hotel chains are now factoring proximity to stadiums and concert venues when selecting new locations. While cricket matches and major performances can trigger sharp spikes in bookings, some executives caution that consistent events throughout the year will be necessary to deliver sustained financial benefits.
