Koffee With Karan 7: Aamir Khan To Blame For Bollywood’s Loss Of KGF-Style Tonality, Per Karan Johar

In a recent episode of Koffee With Karan 7, director Karan Johar makes the claim that star Aamir Khan is to blame for Hindi cinema losing the tonality that South cinema gives. The director of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil added to Aamir during their talk, “In terms of Baahubali, RRR, KGF, and Pushpa, some of the South Indian industry’s films have given us a lot of success, but other of our films haven’t been doing well. Is there a tone that KGF or Pushpa possesses that genuinely used to be there in Hindi cinema that has suddenly changed in our recent films? You are accountable for it because we genuinely let go of it.”

The reason Karan believes Aamir is to blame for everything is because “you came up with two films in the year 2001, Dil Chahta Hai and Lagaan, both of which had new sensibilities and a new syntax in cinema, then you came up with a film in the following year, Rang De Basanti, then you made Taare Zameen Par right after that, with the result that you started making a certain audience and filmmakers,” Karan said.

Aamir scoffed at all the accusations and responded, “No, you are mistaken. All of those were heartland movies. Those films contained feelings. They get to the average person. You will have an emotional connection to it. The movie Rang De Basanti is incredibly moving. The majority of people are affected by it.”Aamir further said, “I am not saying make action films or crude films. Make good films with great stories but choose topics that are relevant to most people. Every filmmaker has the freedom to make what they want. But when you are picking something that the bulk of India is not really interested in… There are niche people who are interested, which most of us don’t realise. That’s what I feel is the difference.”

In recent years, South Indian movies have performed remarkably well on a global scale. However, blockbuster Bollywood movies like Prithviraj, Shamshera, starring Ranbir Kapoor, and Jayeshbhai Jordaar, starring Ranveer Singh, failed to draw viewers to the theatres.

Regarding the job front, Aamir is presently preoccupied with promoting his next family comedy Laal Singh Chadha, which is scheduled to hit theatres on August 11, 2022. Mona Singh and Kareena Kapoor Khan are also featured in the movie.

The next movie Raksha Bandhan starring Akshay Kumar will compete fiercely at the box office with Laal Singh Chadha.
