Journalist brutally murdered in Jharkhand
A journalist working in a popular vernacular newspaper in the state of Jharkhand has been brutally murdered by some unidentified personals.
Several months ago, he filed a police complaint stating that if something happens to his life, the local village chief, against whom he levelled a corruption allegation in one of his news reports, would be responsible.
An investigation into the murder is on. Notably, the family members of the murdered journalist have claimed that a Maoist faction was responsible for the killing.
Several journalist organisations have demanded a thorough enquiry into the murder of their colleague. Most of them have been very vocal about the need for the creation of a policy to ensure the security of journalists.
It is the high time to create a policy in the country to ensure the security of journalists. So far, no serious initiatives have been taken towards that front by the central government or by any state government.
Recently, another journalist was killed in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh by some Maoist factions.
Journalists often work in dangerous environments and with unfriendly people as part of their job. There job is to speak fearlessly for the good of the public about what those are kept secret by some. For that reason, that dangerous and unfriendliness are inevitable. But, for the good of our democracy, their right to do their job must be protected.
